How I Became the Sea

{credit}

I'd be lying if I said I never thought of you anymore. I'd be lying if I said nothing ever reminded me of you. Shoot, I'd even be lying if I said I never cried for you. But I'd also be lying if I said that I didn't know that would get less and less every day. I'd be lying if I said there was still a hole in my heart left by you.

I have good days where you never cross my mind. I'm so happy with my life right now. I know that you probably think I've wandered off the straight and narrow path. That I've given into the world. It makes me happy to thing that I'll never have to undergo your judgement about that again. I feel free knowing that you can do now is judge me from afar. I don't have to deal with your judgement anymore.

But I also have bad days. Where I miss having a "best" friend. I don't have a best friend right now - at least, not the way you and I used to be. But that's a good thing. Sometimes I envy my friends who are "bffs" and so close. They do some of the things you and I used to do, but now I'm on my own in that sense. But then I think back to how closed off I was back then. How you were the only person I had room for in my life - and I know that I wouldn't go back to that even if I could. I feel like the person that was cowering inside myself our whole friendship has finally busted out and I love her. I love who I am, and I know you wouldn't approve.

I've made peace with who I am and how I got here. I can look back on our friendship and smile on them as part of my past. That's all behind me and "no one can be mad [or sad!] about the past!" as Phoebe would say.

I know I'm not what you thought I was.

xo,

Katie Burry

Just a Holiday Every Night

"But when I close these heavy lids after dark
Each sweet dream is a target
And all my shots are so consistently wide of the mark

"‘Cause the angriest bark is always worse than the bite
Like the ache in my chest that my heart didn’t invite
But if the prettiest romance isn’t perfectly right
That makes every love lost just a holiday every night."

Lately... {Packages and Country Music}

1. This week I passed 100 followers on Instagram! Woohoo!
2. Remember when I said those $2 cups of coffee would add up? Well, it's already started...
3. Laying out an outfit the night before allows me to sleep in a few minutes longer the next morning.
4. I park under this tree whenever I have the chance. It's so gorgeous!
5. Came home from work to find two packages for me! Made it all worth it!
6. My Ipsy bag this month. My favorite yet!
7. What was in my other package! Too bad I have to exchange them for a half size smaller. :(
8. No one would re-watch Downton Abbey with me so I started re-watching it by myself.
9. Went to Target for some new tights and ended up doing some retail therapy!

1. Sailboats // Sky Sailing
2.  Behind the Clouds // Brad Paisley
3. Real Gone // Sheryl Crow
4. Life is a Highway // Rascal Flats
5. Good Time // Owl City

1. This is a favorite song of mine - as are all of the songs on An Airplane Carried Me to Bed -  it's such an emotional sounding song, and I just love the reference to Audrey Hepburn! ♥
2. I really love this song. It reminds me so much of visiting my aunt and uncle's ranch in Missouri, and my friends out in Wyoming. And let's face it - Brad Paisley really is just one of the best country artists ever.
3. This used to be a favorite song of mine and I've started listening to it again. I just really love the Cars soundtrack, ok?
4. Now that I think of it, I really have been listening to a lot of country music lately... maybe seeing my Aunt Mary last weekend got me started on it. I really just want to go back out to Missouri and then Colorado/Wyoming. I need me some country time. ♥
5. Do I really need to explain yet again why I love this song?? I've been singing it at work all week! (Because, you know, Pandora never plays it anymore. Why Pandora, why? I thought we were buds...)

1. From Time to Time
2. Doc Martin
3. Once Upon a Time season 2

1. Viki commented on my last outfit post and recommended this movie. Of course I couldn't resist a movie written by the same writer of Downton Abbey (especially one with Maggie Smith in it!), and it was absolutely fantastic! Really cute and sweet story. Definitely want to watch it again sometime!
2. I love this show (but then, what British Show don't I like!?). And even thought he's grumpy, and a bit gruff, I just love the Doc and I just can't wait until he gets together with Louisa!
3. This season is definately not disapointing! Despite the fact that I find Snow just the tiniest bit annoying, I'm really loving it so far! I'm actually really liking Regina and so far my only complaint is that Mr. Gold needs to be in more! Also, are me and Maddie the only ones who think that Henry looks like a younger version of Adam Young!?

Take Me Somewhere Nice // Daily Outfit

I had some really cute outfits (if I do say so myself!) all weekend, and since I don't really have a favorite, I decided just to post them in chronological order. So here was the first outfit of the weekend!

I wore this on our way to to Missouri, as well as to my uncle + brand new aunt's wedding rehearsal, and I just really, really loved it. I'm obsessed with polka-dots this autumn and I loved how the cardi + tights looked with this dress. I think the prints complimented each other really well, and I just adore the gold buttons on the back of the dress! ♥

I didn't manage to get a great close-up shot of it, but I had the most amazing faux-tattoo to go with this outfit! Maddie drew it for me and she did such a good job! Made me wish the bird cage + hearts were permanently there! If I had to pick two tattoos I was most likely to get one would be this one and the other would be three paper airplanes on my wrist in honor of Sky Sailing, which really is the unappreciated masterpiece of Adam Young. Much as I love all of them, I think An Airplane Carried Me to Bed will always sort of be my favorite of Adam Young album. There's just something about it that connects with me on a deep, emotional level...

An Airplane Carried Me to Bed // Daily Outfit

"She was still wearing white and Robin's egg blue,
her grandmother's dress"

"We are lost in the sound
Close your eyes
And I will twirl you around.
"

"And I'll be your escort in a sad waltz around the room
I'll twirl you all around without a sound
"

It took me forever to finally decide on a name for this post. I was listening to Brielle by Sky Sailing when I began putting this post together, and I had a moment where I was just like "that's it. That's what this post is." But none of the dozens of lines I tried worked. Then I realized that this post isn't Brielle, or Tennis Elbow, or A Little Opera Goes a Long Way - it's all of them. It reminds me of the entire An Airplane Carried Me to Bed album.

For those of you who don't know, An Airplane Carried Me to Bed is the only album by the band, Sky Sailing. A project of Adam Young before he started Owl City, and one of my favorite collections of songs ever. It's not very well known, even though I think it's some of his best work. Every song is simple in musical composition, despite the fact that the lyrics are riddled with hidden meanings. Acoustic guitars and simple piano melodies will sing you to sleep while you find yourself realizing that Tennis Elbow isn't about tennis at all. You'll find yourself being carried off to fields of tall grass bathed in gorgeous sunlight while the few sparse trees cast long shadows. At least, if you're anything like me, you will.

Or maybe I'm just "lost in the sound."

P.S. This is my first proper outfit shoot with Thornton! I had a bit of trouble since it was hard to know where to focus with all the grass getting in the way, and me not being, you know, in front of the camera, but I'm still really pleased with the result! What do you all think?

Dreams Don't Turn to Dust // Why I Love Owl City

  "I made for the countryside,
And my eyes never grew so wide,
Apple, raspberry, river blue,
I don't wanna leave without you
"
~ Dreams Don't Turn to Dust by Owl City

I've always loved fireflies. I remember sitting outside at dusk and watching ours and our neighbors yard fill up with them. I used to imagine a nymph with long curly hair dancing among them in a full skirt of some gorgeous color  - and I'm pretty sure I tried to do a scene like this at least twice in the many books I wrote - but then, I just generally love nature.

The trees, the sun, the moon, the stars, the birds, the grass, the wind, the rivers and lakes - it's all so inspiring and thrilling to me.

At the Tender age of eighteen I've seen enough people get so caught up in work and all the little details and stresses of life to realize that I don't ever want to do that. I make a conscious effort not to. No matter how many hardships I go through I want to be able to marvel at the wonder and beauty of the world. I see life as a great adventure - full of wonders to marvel at if only one pays attention - but it seems the older people get the more they forget this.

When the burdens of life come people fall. They forget the little beauties and joys of life and become slaves to the work of it. I've seen it happen more than once before, and it's one of the saddest things I've ever seen. The worst of it, though, is that the older I get the more I see it. Friends who used to be ready to set out to do whatever they dream come crashing down and settle for the dull "reality" of "life."

It's rare, now, for me to find people that see the world as I do. Most of my friends have seen too much of the pain, or been knocked down too much to see the beauty and adventure in the world that I do. I long to find someone who looks at the simple beauties of this world with the same awed expression that I do. And I don't mean beauties like the Grand Canyon, Rocky Mountains, or Great Lakes - but everyday beauties like a ray of sun peeking through the leaves of a tree, the tall grass bowing to the wind, or the feel of a hot summer day.

The only person I've ever heard of that I feel might just see the world the say I do is Adam Young of Owl City (come on, you knew that was coming, didn't you?). While most mainstream musicians are writing about passionate love and horrible breakups, he draws inspiration from nature (Fireflies, Dreams Don't Turn to Dust), playing pretend as a child (Hot Air Balloon), and visits to the dentist (Dental Care). When he does write about love it's a sweet tune of "I love you and enjoy spending time with you" (Sunburn, Bird and the Worm, If My Heart was a House).

"Like a kite in the bright midday, / Wonder stole my breath away, / Shy sonata for Mercury, / The stars always sing so pretty. / This picnic will soon depart, / Real life, I'm sad to see you go, / I'll miss you with all my heart, / But I'd rather be alone. / 'Cause I couldn't live without, / The sunsets that dazzle in the dusk, / So I'll drag the anchor up, / And rest assured, 'cause dreams don't turn to dust! / Dreams don't turn to dust"

No one's ever said as much to me before, but I know that there's a great many people that think I'm too optimistic - that I don't really understand how hard and terrible the world is. It's rather discouraging at time, to be honest. But when I listen to songs like this, I feel that I'm not alone in my beliefs. That there is at least one other person out there that sees the world in the same light that I do. And that is very encouraging. It's also why I love Owl City so, so much. ♥

"If by chance you ever feel as though you've come to know these songs or empathize with the emotions therein, please consider yourself a friend of mine because in a manner of speaking, you know me. As the saying goes, one can truly glimpse the artist through his/her art, and that expression certainly proves faithful in my case. This music is my heart and soul. This is who I am."

Take it All Away by Owl City // Music Monday

This is a remix of one of the brand new songs by Owl City. The original song can be heard here (I couldn't find a video with it to embed) and will be included on Owl City's new EP, Shooting Stars, which will be released tomorrow. Yay!!!!

So far Adam has released three songs from the new EP: Take it All Away, Dementia, and Gold. Dementia is the most like his last two albums, but Take it All Away, and Gold are very different. A new style for Owl City. And I know that a lot of people don't like it, but I just love it! It's totally different, and I'm not going to say I like it more than the other three albums, but I like it just as much! Honestly, it seems that no matter what Adam Young does I like it. From the simple, acoustic sounds of An Airplane Carried Me to Bed, to the techno sounds of Ocean Eyes and All things Bright and Beautiful, to the more traditional pop sounds (from what I can tell so far) of Shooting Stars - I love it all! Adam Young has yet to disappoint me and I seriously cannot wait to get Shooting Stars loaded onto my iPod! ♥

So, to sum up this incredibly long Music Monday post: I love Owl City and I'm an Adam Young fan for life!

In other news, I'm really sorry I've not been around much the past couple weeks. A lot has been going on, and I've been stressed out. Obviously my body doesn't deal well with stress because I've been tired, not sleeping well, and extremely moody. I've been really depressed and not wanting to do much of anything, but I'm finally starting to get out of it, and excited to blog again. Woohoo! I have a bunch of backlogged outfits to post this week!

Eternity by Paul van Dyk ft. Adam Young // Music Monday

Yup... we're back to Adam Young songs. Technically this isn't actually one of this songs, but he's featured in it. I can't help it, I just love his style/taste in music so much!

Not much to say about this song except I've been listening to it non-stop since I downloaded it. But then, that's no surprise. ;)

A Little Opera Goes a Long Way // Sky Sailing

What's this? A non-Owl City Music Monday?? Shocking! It does, however, still feature Adam Young. *smirk* What can I say, he's my favorite celebrity!

This song is from Adam Young's first band - Sky Sailing. Since my little sister and I now have all the Owl City songs between the two of us, I decided to look up some of his pre-Owl City work, and I'm so glad I did! This is one my favorite Adam Young songs. It's not at all techno, but it's peaceful and sweet and reminds me of the mountains for some strange reason. Although I can't for the life of me tell you what the lyrics mean... but the, that's Adam Young for you. ;)
